Text Spine Nursery:
Traditional Tales Set the foundations of a child’s reading journey. Chosen texts link to the Learning Without Limits curriculum subject coverage and intentionally cross-reference to traditional tales to enhance the Learning without Limits content. Children also read and revisit their ‘top 5’ traditional tales alongside additional texts to enhance the curriculum at key points.
Reception: Alternative/ Twisted Tales Children in Reception will read alternative tales that have been specifically selected to build upon the traditional tales read in Nursery. Children will have ‘over read’ traditional tales in Nursery in order to build upon these plot lines in Reception.
Year 1: The Gateway to the Curriculum with both genre and culture threaded through. Texts have been purposefully selected to provide foundations for genres that appear later in child’s reading journey Y1-6. RWI is the main vehicle to GF children’s reading at Gorsefield. Therefore the texts outlined below for Y1 are used for Essential English Skills lessons. Texts are used as a hook/ stimulus for writing including grammar.
Year 2: 20th Century Classics. Texts have been purposefully selected to build upon children’s understanding of classics from nursery and Reception.
Year 3-6: Key Strand Novels with broader curriculum/ science enhancement texts. GR texts are used as a vehicle to 1) Understand, use and apply the reading domains. 2) Content of text to enhance understanding of broader curriculum coverage (as all texts have been purposely chosen).
All children from Nursery- Year 6 will read the ½ termly guided reading books and lesson books as a minimum. The texts outlined are essential reads for that year group, which also include Learning without Limits link texts too.
All year groups have a transition text for transition week in September: this has been selected as the book has an age appropriate moral. Each moral is different and progressive through from N-Y6.
Years 1-6 have a specific focus of inspirational women who changed the world additional to the spine of books. The women of whom are key examples of people who have overcome barriers/ challenge and we celebrate their individual difference. This rationale originates from the fact that a number of the books across KS2 include men as the main characters/ protagonists.
RWI suggested books are ‘read to’ the children, these books appear later in the book spine for children to read Independently, then an alternative as a novel for further application and challenge.
All links have been made across the book spine as ‘foundations for…’ or ‘building on…’. These link to the Learning without Limits broader curriculum/ science subject matter to enrich the knowledge taught and seeing this through application in context.
All year groups (Rec-Y6 excl Y2) have a significant author study where several of the author’s books are read throughout the year. In a year group such as Y2.
Spanish texts have been mapped to enhance content of Spanish lessons. In many cases, the texts chosen provide the Spanish version of an English text previously read in school eg: In Nursery, children read the traditional tale ‘The Three Little Pigs’ then during Year 3 Spanish, the children read ‘The Three Little Pigs/Los Tres Cerditos’ to link to the Spanish lesson content of animals.
World Book Day Parent/ Carer Reading Session
World Book Day is a special celebration that brings stories to life and inspires a love of reading in children of all ages. In school, the day is made even more memorable with a wonderful parent and carer reading session, where families are invited into the classroom to share books together. Children have the opportunity to read alongside their parents or carers, listen to different voices telling their favourite stories, and explore new books in a warm and welcoming environment. These shared reading moments not only strengthen children’s literacy skills but also highlight the importance of reading at home. The session creates a strong sense of community, showing pupils that reading is something to be enjoyed, celebrated, and shared beyond the classroom.
