Phonics & Spelling
At Gorsefield Primary School, phonics and spelling is taught using the Read Write Inc Phonics programme and Read Write Inc Spelling Programme.
Read Write Inc Phonics
Read Write Inc. Phonics is a comprehensive literacy programme, weaving decoding, comprehension, writing and spelling together seamlessly. Fidelity to the teaching programme, rigorous assessment, tracking and one-to-one tutoring ensure that schools guarantee progress for every child.
Read Write Inc Phonics is a synthetic phonics programme for children from Reception to Year 4.
At the core of the RWI approach, phonics teaching puts reading at the heart of Gorsefield Primary School and ensures all staff delivering the programme are fully trained experts. Staff delivering RWI have the knowledge and determination to each every child, regardless of age, background or need, to read fluently.
RWI empowers children to read as children meet a range of engaging texts to both hear and read aloud.
Once children become confident and fluent readers, they progress onto the Gorsefield reading and writing curriculum, which covers all aspects of the National Curriculum for English and is steeped in high quality texts which reflect the diverse community we serve.

Read Write Inc Spelling
Read Write Inc. Spelling is for children in Years 2 to 6 who have completed Read Write Inc. Phonics and for children who have met the English National Curriculum expectations for reading in Year 2. It includes all the spelling requirements of the English National Curriculum Years 2 to 6, and revises spelling taught in Year 1.
Direct teaching underpins the programme. Spelling is taught cumulatively and systematically, with deliberate, focused practice. Constant revision and practice are key to children’s success.
Children learn the routines and behaviours for each activity, and practise these until they use them automatically.
This allows them to focus on what matters most – learning to spell.
The spelling programme:
- makes sense of the most complex alphabetic code in the world- 150 spellings of 44 speech sounds.
- builds upon teaching strategies and spelling activities from Read Write Inc. Phonics
- is organised in daily, 15-minute well-paced lessons
- provides plenty of writing practice, with a clear record of children’s progress.
The programme’s core activities teach:
- alternative spellings of vowels
- alternative spellings of consonants
- homophones
- the impact of adding prefixes and suffixes to root words
- spelling plural nouns
- ‘silent’ letters
- unusual letter strings
- word families.
